Brainiac: Transmission After Zero
Official Selection: SXSW, Cleveland International Film Festival, Oak Cliff Film Festival
“Before you think that this is a documentary about yet another rock musician who died in his late twenties, think again. ‘Transmissions After Zero’ is essential to where we are at socially, culturally and creatively in 2019.” -At Large Magazine
“Compelling… ‘Transmissions After Zero’ chronicles Brainiac’s unlikely rise and subsequent fall with intelligence and humour.” -Variety
By the mid-90s Dayton, Ohio had become a hotbed of indie rock superstars, spawning the likes of The Breeders and Guided by Voices. The most innovative of them all however, was Brainiac, led by musical genius and charismatic frontman Tim Taylor. While their songs maintained a pop sensibility, Taylor’s penchant for experimentation made them wholly unique. But on the eve of signing with a major label, tragedy would strike with Taylor shockingly killed in a bizarre car accident. Offering a fitting tribute to a sonic pioneer, Transmissions After Zero features ripping live footage and candid interviews with members of Nine Inch Nails, The Melvins, The Mars Volta, The National, and Hole, all of whom were greatly influenced by Brainiac’s sound. A must see for all music-lovers, the film explores the band’s legacy, its influence on pop culture and how people survive grief and the loss of those they hold most dear.
