Bob Byington | 74mins | USA | Comedy | Australian Premiere | 2019Official Selection: SXSW, Maryland Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Mont Clair Film Festival, Dallas International Film Festival

“With Frances Ferguson, Byington has crafted a funny dark comedy that’s at once a playful and sardonic tale of an outsider, and a brilliant commentary on gender roles.” – Robert Daniels

“The void has never seemed so lighthearted, nor the abyss so appealing.” – Christopher Llewellyn Reed, Hammer to Nail.

Frances Ferguson (played Kaley Wheless in what is sure to be a star-making turn) is feeling discontented. Choleric and callous, she is weighed down by her family and trapped in a dead-end job as a substitute teacher in middle-of-nowhere Nebraska. And how does Frances attempt to break from her persistent bout of ennui? An affair with a student of course! In this blacker-than-pitch-black comedy, Bob Byington (7 Chinese Brothers, Infinity Baby), confidently channels a brew of disturbing humour and witty discontentedness, delivering the eponymous Frances as at once simultaneously loathsome and frighteningly relatable. Narrated by the legendary Nick Offerman and featuring a cast of all-star alternative comic actors, Frances Ferguson lands somewhere between the careful calibration of  Arrested Development and the grotesque humour of  Todd Solondz’s Happiness. For lovers of black comedy, this is perhaps the only tale of statutory rape that is guaranteed to have you rolling in the aisles.

Please note: The Saturday screening of FRANCES FERGUSON at 12 noon is replacing FRIEDKIN UNCUT. (Due to issues outside of our control, the film Friedkin Uncut was unable to be screened.)
