Red Letter Day
Official Selection: Calgary Underground Film Festival, Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, Cinequest.
The Edwards family, matriarch Melanie and her two teen kids have just moved into the affluent, peaceful (and very white-bread) neighbourhood of Aspen Ridge. Little do they know that their tranquil life in the burbs is about to be plunged into murderous chaos, in an occurrence that would be far too much for a Twilight Zone episode. On a day off, they find three red envelopes in the mailbox, telling them they each have to murder a neighbour before that neighbour murders them. At first, they think it’s a lame prank but when they learn that the entire community has received the same letters, victims start falling and things get deadly serious. With the streets literally running red and social media going berserk, panic and paranoia reach unprecedented heights. Cameron Macgowan’s feature debut is hilarious and blood-curdling in equal parts, paying homage to films like Shivers and Re-Animator while in a class all of its own.
