Them That Follow
Official Selection: Sundance, MIFF, Edinburgh Film Festival, Calgary Underground Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival.
“Poulton and Savage don’t force the audience to demonise their devotees. The movie respects their beliefs — or at least the sincerity of their beliefs ... the duo trusts in the goodness of people, even when they put themselves through insane tests. There’s rattlers in them hills. But there’s love too.” — Variety
"As the movie progresses, it also dips into full-blown body-horror territory, with hideous snake bites, gory self-mutilation, and a last-minute surgical procedure performed by a clearly unsterile tree saw. The filmmakers don’t flinch away from any of this." - /Film
Amongst the mountains of Appalachia resides a community whose lives are centred around their church - the kind of fundamentalist sect that involves speaking in tongues and handling venomous snakes during sermons. As the preacher’s daughter, Mara (Alice Englert) is seen as the image of purity but she has a dark secret threatening to tear her town apart. Though she’s committed to the devout and well-respected Garrett, her heart lies with childhood sweetheart, Augie (Thomas Mann), who has strayed from the church. Though Mara has always placed her faith in God, as things start to unravel, she begins to question the veracity of what she’s always been taught. Featuring an all-star cast including Oscar Winner Olivia Colman, Walton Goggins, and Jim Gaffigan, Them That Follows catapults its audience into a world where morality and belief don’t always align, and consequences can be devastating when faith is stretched past breaking point.
